Thursday Games: I've got a friend
Each Thursday we'll bring you a fun game to play with your kids!
This week's game is...
I've got a friend
This is a great introduction activity, but the kids like it so much that we play it all through the year.
All children are seated in a circle. Teacher starts the song, children join her.
"I've got a friend and her name is____, ____ Stand UP!
Do a little dance now! Make a funny face now.
Touch your toes now. _____ sit DOWN!"
Always do this with a SMILE on your face! The teacher works her way around the circle, choosing a new childs name each time. That child moves to the center of the circle when she stands up..then moves back to her place when told to sit down.
The words can be changed to any activity that you can think of..the sillier the better! My students sit on carpet squares so that they always stay in a circle and know where to return to, and the circle maintains its shape!

A Slice of Watermelon
paper plates
red construction paper
green tempera (or poster) paint

This is a fun craft to do with preschoolers and they look wonderful displayed on a bullitin board! The teacher needs to give each child half a paper plate and some green paint. Instruct the kids to paint the rim of the plate green and tell them that this will be the rind of the melon. Then give each child a half-circle of red construction paper (cut to fit the inner part of the paper plate half) and have them glue it in place. Now, here's the fun part! Give each child a small pile of watermelon seeds,a dixie cup of glue and a paintbrush. Have them dab dots of glue wherever they want their seeds and they can stick them on. This is such a cute craft and, with a little prep. work on the teacher's part, something they can do almost on their own! Who wouldn't love a nice big slice of watermelon on a hot summer's day?

Tuesday Recipe: Dryer Lint Modeling Material
Each Tuesday we'll bring you a tasty recipe or craft recipe to make with your kids!
This week's recipe is...
Dryer Lint Modeling Material
3 c Lint (from laundry dryers)
2 c Cold or warm water
2/3 c Non-self-rising wheat flour
3 drops oil of wintergreen
Old newspaper
Put lint and water in a large saucepan. Stir to dampen all parts of the lint. Add flour and stir thoroughly to prevent lumps. Add oil of wintergreen. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture holds together and forms peaks. Pour out onto several thicknesses of newspaper to cool. Use as you would papier-mache pulp or shaped over armatures (boxes, bottles, balloons, and so forth) or press into a mold. This material will dry in 3 to 5 days to a very hard, durable surface. When wet it has a feltlike consistency. It dries to smooth or rough, depending on how it is used. When pressed into a mold, a hard, smooth finish is obtained. Stored in an airtight container, it will keep for several days.

Monday Music: Down By the Bay
Each Monday we'll bring you a fun song to sing with your kids!
This week's song is...
Down By the Bay
Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say
"Did you ever see a bear
Combing his hair
Down by the bay?"
Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say
"Did you ever see a bee
With a sunburned knee
Down by the bay?"
Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say
"Did you ever see a moose
Kissing a goose
Down by the bay?"
Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say
"Did you ever see a whale
With a polka dot tail
Down by the bay?"
Down by the bay!
